Embedded Excel document turned into an image and text box file

I created an embedded excel document in my report.  When I opened it one day, it randomly became an image file.  Double-clicking would not convert it so I can edit it.  All the text in the embedded worksheet became textboxes!
How did this happen?  How can I revert back so I can edit my embedded worksheet? 
Additional info:  The worksheet is not a reference to an Excel document.
