After Win 7 upgrade our 2 Dell laptops hang on variable apps and multi-tasking is terrible at best.

Both systems have 320GB hard drives/4GB ram and ATI mobile video chipset.
Worst upgrade experience ever, I've done them all Win 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98, me, XP, Vista and now 7.

I have a Dell 1537 with Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit 320GB/4GB ram ATI video and two Dell 1520 320GB/4GB ram ATI video with XP Home purchased in March and waited for the Windows 7 launch.
First I'm very disappointed that in MS great wisdom Windows 7 would
not allow me to upgrade my Vista machine to Windows 7 Pro but would let me upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate I don't understand this upgrade path at all it does not make any since.
I've spent my whole weekend installing Windows 7 pro from scratch loading all but
two of the Dell 1537 studio drivers and my system runs extremely slow and randomly freezes with programs like IE8, Outlook, iTunes, Firefox, Computer Properties Manage and the multitasking terrible it was much better in Vista Home Premium 64 Bit.
I also upgraded
one of daughters Dell laptop 1520 from XP to Windows 7 Home and it responds the same way.
She was so excited after taking her computer away for two days when I returned it a few hours ago and was all smiles, then after a few hours of use with hung programs,
slow multi-tasking and several reboots she asked if I could restore it back to Windows XP home and I feel the same about my Dell 1537 studio I feel like restoring it back to Vista 64bit.
My other daughter was the smart one she decided that if she had to loose
all of her programs and all the hours of subject matter by upgrading to Windows 7 Home she preferred to not have the upgrade and seeing what I and her older sister have experienced she is not glad she made that decision.
Before I spend hours restoring back
to two Dell laptops back to original OS any suggestions? P.S.
Windows Vista and XP booted much faster then Windows 7 does.

Freezes: Has it given you any error messages?

It sounds as if it could be a driver issue.
I would attempt booting into safe mode with networking and determine if it is running smoother.
1.     Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.
Click the Start button, click the arrow next to the
Shut Down button, and then click Restart.
2.     Do one of the following:
·         If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts.
You need to press F8 before the
Windows logo appears.
If the Windows logo appears, you'll need to try again by waiting until the
Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
·         If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start in safe mode, and then press F8.
3.     On the
Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight the safe mode option you want, and then press Enter.
For more information about options, see
Advanced startup options (including safe mode).
4.     Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator rights.
When your computer is in safe mode, you'll see the words Safe Mode in the corners of your monitor.
To exit safe mode, restart your computer and let
Windows start normally.

Caution: Unless you an advanced computer user, we DO NOT recommend editing the Windows registry manually. Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. We do not guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

• Click the Start button.
• Type "command" in the search box... DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
• While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
• You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
• Click Yes.
• A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
• Type "regedit" and hit ENTER.
• In the Registry Editor, select the Error 0x9C-related key (eg. Windows Operating System) you want to back up.
• From the File menu, choose Export.
• In the Save In list, select the folder where you want to save the Windows Operating System backup key.
• In the File Name box, type a name for your backup file, such as "Windows Operating System Backup".
• In the Export Range box, be sure that "Selected branch" is selected.
• Click Save.
• The file is then saved with a .reg file extension.
• You now have a backup of your MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION-related registry entry.
