Fast Solution to Problem: asx streams in Internet Explorer 8 will not open WMP

asx streams in Internet Explorer 8 will not open WMP

Whenever I try to play an online video stream using a .asx link IE8 fails to open Media Player to run the stream.
Instead I get the "Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage" error.
I have tried virus and spyware scan (using NIS 2009) and I have tried
turning off the firewall and auto protect and made sure WMP was the default and associated with asx but no luck.
I am using Vista Ultimate 64 but I still use the 32bit version of IE.
I have a laptop that runs Vista Home Premium and IE8 and pretty much nearly
every program that runs on this desktop and the whole thing works great and WMP opens up the .asx feed as it should so I don't get why it isn't working here on the desktop.
I'm confused.
Any help is appreciated.

Hello mrnumnuts,
Well, there is nothing wrong with the link you provided as it launched Media Player 11 from IE8 without any trouble.
Let’s try backing you up to IE7 and see if you can launch the sites.
I am providing you a link to a Microsoft Knowledge Base article that tells you how to uninstall IE8:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700
Make sure that once you are rolled back to IE7 that you are able to open these web pages.
If you can, then it may have been a problem with your IE8 install.
Here is a link to a Microsoft Knowledge Base article that discusses solving IE8 installation problems:

Let us know if this solves your problem.  If not, please include the answers to my questions, any error messages verbatim from the screen, and a detailed description of the failure in your response.
Thanks,
Jack
