Backup starts but aborts after 5 - 10 minutes with an error code: 0x80070422

In my Windows 7 professional on a 64 bit machine I haven't been able to get any backups done for the last 3 months.  I'm using an external USB drive (1 Terabyte).  I get a message saying, "The service could not be started either because it is disabled or
it has no enabled device associated with it.  (0x80070422).  I read a similar problem in the forum so I manually started the Windows Installer but my backup attempt still aborted.  I tried to change my setup to backup to my internal drive but get the same
error messages.
 Any suggestions?

Have you installed any third party backup softwares?
Such error messages occur if backup services are not running.

You may try the below steps and check if this helps.
1.
Click on start button, type services and press enter.
2.
In the services window, search for the following services.
• Volume Shadow Copy
• Windows Backup
3.
Right-click on one service at a time and select Properties.
4.
Click on General tab.
Select Automatic for Startup type.
Click on start button is this service has not started.
5.
Close services window.
Also run an online malware/virus scan on the computer.

3. Go to Windows Error Reporting.
4. Click on System and Maintenance, then click Problem Reports and Solutions.
