Add numbers in cells that also contain text
I use Excel 2007 for my grading record.
It works fine for adding a set (column) of scores when the only items in cells are numbers.
But if I add a text label (L standing for a Late submission, for example) the score number doesn't get added into the total.
In other words, the SUM formula ignores any cells with letters.
How can I modify the formula so that it includes numbers in cells that also contain a text item?

You can use a "special" format for cells that will display the L, but still be manipulated arithmetically:
right-click a cell > Format Cells...
> Number > Custom > General" L"
