Adding values of cells in a row or column?

for example if the value in  A1 is 3;
and values in cells A1, B2, C2 & D2 are :  A2 = 10 B2 = 20 C2 = 30  & D2 = 50
how do I get excel to add values that are in cells A2, B2 & C2 ,

if the value in A1 is 3 then how do i get excel to add the values present in 3 ROWS
likewise if the in A1 is 3 then how do i get excel to add values in 3 COLUMNS ?

Modifying the formula from Ediardp that base upon my understanding, A1 is the axis, so if A1 = 3, need to sum the values from A2:C4.
If I am right, the formula should be…
 
=SUM(OFFSET(A2:D100,0,0,A1,A1))
