Computer freezing and won't move past login screen after normal reboot

Hi all,
 
I've had sporadic freezing issues with my PC since purchasing it (this guy:

The freezes don't seem to occur at times of particular stress, such that I don't recall ever
having it freeze while playing games or watching movies.
Rather, it seems to freeze during normal use of Internet Explorer, when downloading something, or when listening to music through iTunes.
Even then, it's not very predictable.
I've gone for large periods
without freezing, and I've had it happen a couple times in a single night.
It doesn't seem to correlate to the laptop's temperature, either.
 
When I attempt to reboot normally, I get to the login screen fine, login, and the screen goes black without ever loading my desktop in any capacity.
It doesn't seem to freeze as I get sound at this point, but I can't do anything and end up having to just hard
reset it again.
A caveat to this is that it only occurs when I have my laptop plugged in.
If I attempt to reboot normally with my laptop unplugged, it will start fine.
I have a spare battery I've already tried switching out, and the same thing occurred regardless
of the battery I use.
It also occurs whether or not I have my charger plugged into a normal outlet or a surge protector.
 
When I attempt to reboot in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking, everything works perfectly fine.
If I shut down normally from Safe Mode and reboot normally, it then works fine.
 
I'm at a loss.
I've tried Startup Repair to no avail but little else.
If anyone has ideas or experience with this, I'd appreciate it.

1)       Do you remember making any changes to the computer?
Method 1:  Try clean boot to look for other software conflicts with computer in Normal mode.
