Hi Tyler Holmes,
1.
What is the version of Adobe reader that is currently installed on your computer?
The reason to ask you this question is the version 8.2 has some compatibility issues and upgrading to the latest version of Adobe was the solution to this problem.
2.
By the way, are you able to access the programs that have adobe reader icons?
In the meantime, follow these steps.
Step 1:
Click on "fixit" from the below link and check if that helps.
When you run an .exe file on a Windows Vista-based or Windows 7-based computer, the file may start a different program
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950505
Step 2:

I would suggest you to reset the icon cache and then if that does not help rebuild icon cache.

A.
To Reset Icon cache follow the below mentioned steps –

a.
Right click on empty area of the desktop and click on Personalize.
b.
Click on the Display Properties link.
c.
Under Colors, select Medium (16-bit) and click on Apply.
NOTE: If you already have Medium (16-bit) selected, then select Highest (32-bit) instead.
Sometimes you will need to do a restart first, then proceed to step.

d.
Try both ways.
Click yes to confirm the new settings.

e.
Now, select Highest (32-bit) and click on OK.
NOTE: If you already have Highest (32-bit) selected, then select Medium (16-bit) instead.
Click on Yes to confirm the new settings.
Step 3:

B.
To Rebuild icon cache follow the below mentioned steps-

a.
Click Start, then control panel and in the search box write Folder options.
b.
Now click Folder Options to open and select (dot) Show hidden files and folders.
c.
Open a Windows Explorer window.
d.
Go to C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Local
e.
Right click on IconCache.db and click on Delete.
f.
Click on Yes to confirm the deletion.
NOTE: This deletes the file to the Recycle Bin.
It is safe to empty the Recycle Bin when finished.
g.
Close the window.
h.
Empty the Recycle Bin.
i.
Restart the computer.
j.
When you go back, you will notice the Size of the IconCache.db file is smaller, and the Date Modified is now the current date.
NOTE: If for some reason IconCache.db is not there or the size has not changed much then you may just restart the computer again.
You may need to restart a couple of times in some cases.
k.
The icon cache will get rebuilt.

Manually editing the Windows registry

Caution: Unless you an advanced PC user, please do not edit the Windows registry manually.

Because of this risk, we highly recommend using a trusted registry cleaner such as SmartPCFixer Using a registry cleaner automates the process of finding invalid registry entries, missing file references (like the one causing your MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION error), and broken links within the registry. A backup is automatically created before each scan, with the ability to undo any changes in a single click, protecting you against the possibility of PC damage. The best part is that repairing registry errors can also dramatically improve system speed and performance.

  • Click the Start button.
  • Type "command" in the search box... DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
  • While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
  • You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
  • Click Yes.
  • A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
  • Type "regedit" and hit ENTER.
  • In the Registry Editor, select the Error 0x9C-related key (eg. Windows Operating System) you want to back up.
  • From the File menu, choose Export.
  • In the Save In list, select the folder where you want to save the Windows Operating System backup key.
  • In the File Name box, type a name for your backup file, such as "Windows Operating System Backup".
  • In the Export Range box, be sure that "Selected branch" is selected.
  • Click Save.
  • The file is then saved with a .reg file extension.
  • You now have a backup of your MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION-related registry entry.

The next steps in manually editing your registry will not be discussed in this article due to the high risk of damaging your system. If you would like to learn more about manual registry editing, please see the links below.
