Can not download patches from Microsoft

I can connect to Technet or the security bulletin site and follow the links to the articles and patches.
When I clidk the download button I receive an error Internet Explorer cannot display the web page.
When I click the diagnose option I get the message:
"download.microsoft.com" is not set up to establish a connection on port "World Wide Web service (HTTP)" with this computer.

All other web site I have tried appear to be workng properly, including antivirus sites such as Trend or Symantec.
My antivirus software is up to date ahnd a full scan has reported no infections.
The Windows live Onecare scanner reported nothing.

Operating System Vista x64 SP1

While I am able to download the patches again I am still puzzled by the behaviour.
In response to your comments this is an example:

I load page

when I click the download button on it a new window would open with the URL
http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/A/8/0A8C5FD3-A203-44A1-80E3-B8BE91D1EDE0/Windows6.0-KB970238-x64.msu

saying Internet Explorer cannot display the web page instead of opening the usual download dialogue.

Your ping result would explain that.
Do you have an entry for that host name in your HOSTS file?

The original window would proceed to the thank you for downloading page.

This behaviour was consistent across a number of patch links.

Anyway the problem seems to have gone away now.

If that lookup was only in the dnscache and not in your HOSTS file the /flushdns that you did would explain why it would go away.

I still find the above behaviour quite perplexing.
It is the sort of thing that some malware does to interfere with users getting updates.
; ) Besides checking your HOSTS file you might also want to do a periodic ipconfig /displaydns >dnscache.txt & notepad dnscache.txt If you see entries unexpectedly being
added and staying in there it would be worth your while figuring out why. Note: most entries in the dnscache, other than ones from your HOSTS file, usually have very short Time to Live (TTL) values; so typically a /displaydns display when your system should
have been idle will be empty.

Access the files on your computer via MY COMPUTER
Under the C: drive, access the WINDOWS folder
Select the SOFTWARE DISTRIBUTION folder, followed by the DOWNLOAD folder.
Delete any files within this download folder.
If you are unable to delete these files, open the command prompt (CMD) as the administrator, and type "net stop wuauserv" into the CMD prompt window. Press ENTER. This should allow you to delete the files from step 4.
Once the files are deleted, open and run the CMD as the administrator and type "wuauclt.exe /updatenow". Press ENTER.
